1. Who this policy applies to

This Privacy Policy applies to the Android version of Kanakku (കണക്ക്), package name com.bnilavara.kanakku, and its related features.

Developer / publisher: B Nilavara
Privacy contact: bnilavaraa@gmail.com

2. Data stored and processed by Kanakku

Kanakku may store the following information locally on your device when you use the corresponding features:

  • ledger names, descriptions, currencies, members and settings;
  • expenses, income entries, amounts, dates, categories, merchants, notes and payment-source labels;
  • split-expense information, settlements, settlement history and related accounting state;
  • budgets, category budgets, budget versions, reports and locally generated financial insights;
  • notification preferences and notification delivery state;
  • app settings such as theme, App Lock and screenshot protection;
  • locally cached Premium and rewarded-feature entitlement state;
  • Local Web pairing records, including browser labels and cryptographic credential hashes.

Kanakku does not require these records to be uploaded to a Kanakku-operated server for the app's normal financial features.

3. Financial data and local storage

Kanakku is designed to be offline-first. Core financial records are stored in the app's local database on your device. The app may create a private recovery backup in app-controlled storage when automatic recovery backup is enabled.

Kanakku does not intentionally send your transaction descriptions, merchant names, notes, balances, ledger contents or other financial records to an analytics or crash-reporting service.

4. Backups and exports

Kanakku can create KDB backups and human-readable CSV or Excel exports when you request them. These files may contain sensitive financial information. Once you save, move or share an exported file outside Kanakku's private storage, its security and retention depend on the storage location or service you choose.

Premium purchase state and rewarded-ad entitlements are installation-local and are not intended to be transferred through KDB financial backups.

5. Local Web

Premium users may enable Local Web to access Kanakku from a browser on the same local network. When enabled, selected Kanakku information can be transmitted directly between your phone and the paired browser over your local network. Kanakku does not route this traffic through a Kanakku cloud server.

Important security notice: the current Local Web implementation uses HTTP on the local network rather than HTTPS. Use Local Web only on a private, trusted network that you control. Do not expose its port to the public internet. Stop the Local Web session when you no longer need it.

Local Web uses QR-code or code-based pairing and remembers approved browsers using locally stored credential hashes. You can revoke remembered browsers from the app.

6. Camera access

Kanakku requests camera access only when you choose to scan a Local Web pairing QR code. QR processing occurs for pairing purposes. Kanakku does not use the camera permission to take or upload ordinary photos, and it does not intentionally retain camera images from QR scanning.

7. App Lock and biometric/device authentication

If you enable App Lock, Kanakku can ask Android to authenticate you using a supported biometric or device credential. Biometric templates are handled by the operating system; Kanakku does not receive or store your fingerprint, face template, PIN, password or pattern.

App Lock and screenshot protection are privacy controls. They should not be interpreted as encryption of exported backup files.

8. Notifications

If you enable notifications, Kanakku may generate reminders, budget alerts, spending alerts, settlement reminders and periodic review notifications. Notification preferences and related delivery state are stored locally. Depending on your privacy settings, notification content may be reduced to avoid displaying sensitive financial details on the lock screen.

9. Advertising and consent

Free users may see native or rewarded advertisements provided through Google Mobile Ads (AdMob). Kanakku uses Google's consent tools where required before requesting ads. Google and its advertising partners may process information such as device identifiers, IP address, advertising interactions, diagnostics, consent signals and similar device/app information according to Google's policies and the choices available to you.

Rewarded ads are optional. They may temporarily unlock features such as CSV/Excel export or an additional ledger. Premium users do not receive Kanakku display or rewarded ads while their Premium entitlement is active.

See the Google Privacy Policy and Google advertising technologies.

10. Google Play Billing and Premium

Premium purchases are processed by Google Play. Kanakku does not receive or store your payment-card or bank-card details. The app receives purchase-related information needed to determine entitlement, such as product identifiers, purchase status and related store ownership information.

Kanakku may cache limited Premium entitlement information locally so Premium features can continue during temporary network or Play Store outages. The current Android implementation can use Google Play purchase ownership as the entitlement authority. If a future version uses a separate verification server, this policy will be updated before that processing is enabled.

11. Network and device information

Kanakku requests internet/network access for features such as advertising, Google Play Billing, consent management and Local Web networking. Third-party services such as Google may receive ordinary connection/device information when their SDKs are used.

Kanakku does not require precise or approximate location permission for its core functionality.

12. Data sharing

Kanakku does not sell your financial records.

Information may be processed or shared only in these situations:

  • Google Mobile Ads / consent services: for ad delivery, measurement, fraud prevention and privacy-choice handling where ads are used;
  • Google Play: for Premium purchase processing, purchase ownership and related store functions;
  • Your paired Local Web browser: when you explicitly enable and use Local Web on your local network;
  • Services or people you choose: when you manually export, save or share KDB, CSV or Excel files.

13. Data retention and deletion

Core Kanakku data is retained locally until you edit/delete it, use the app's data-clearing features, or uninstall the app. App-private automatic recovery backups are retained according to Kanakku's recovery behavior and are removed when app-private storage is cleared or removed by the operating system.

Files exported to another folder, cloud drive, messaging app or other service remain there until you delete them from that destination.

Because the current app does not require a Kanakku account or store the core financial database on a Kanakku server, there is normally no separate server-side Kanakku account to delete. You can delete local financial data from within the app and/or remove the app from your device.

Third-party services such as Google retain and delete information under their own privacy and retention policies.

14. Security

Kanakku uses app-private storage for its local database, validates backup/restore data, supports App Lock and screenshot protection, and applies pairing and request protections to Local Web. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure.

For sensitive backups or exports, protect access to the destination file. For Local Web, use only a trusted private LAN because its current local transport is not encrypted with HTTPS.

15. Children’s privacy

Kanakku is a personal finance and expense-management application and is not designed specifically for children. We do not knowingly operate a Kanakku account service that collects children's financial information.

16. Your choices

  • You can use the core app without a Kanakku cloud account.
  • You choose whether to create/share backups and exports.
  • You choose whether to enable Local Web.
  • You can revoke remembered Local Web browsers.
  • You control App Lock, screenshot protection and notification settings in the app.
  • Where Google's consent/privacy options are required and available, Kanakku exposes the applicable Google consent flow.
  • You can purchase Premium to remove Kanakku ads and obtain eligible Premium features.

17. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy when Kanakku's features, third-party services, data practices or legal obligations change. The updated page will show a revised “Last updated” date. Material changes will be reflected in app/store disclosures where required.
